FAQ: My Seachem Flourite® substrate is very dusty. Is there something wrong with it?

Flourite® is a natural material that is soft enough that plant roots are able to extract essential trace elements and minerals directly from the gravel itself, rather than relying on some kind of nutrient coating.  Seachem® rinses the substrate before it is bagged, but sometimes the movement of shipping will cause the bag to develop dust in transit. For this reason, we recommend to rinse the gravel before adding it to your aquarium, and to fill carefully to avoid kicking up significant dust.

If you do get some dust into the water, don't worry!  The dust does not alter pH, GH, KH, or any other major water parameter, and is very easily removed.  Just add some filter floss (Poly-Fil or a similar fine filter media) to your filter.  Dosing a flocculating agent like Clarity® will also help clear the dust out of the water.
