FAQ: Do I need to do water changes when using the Seachem® medications?

None of the Seachem® medications require water changes as a part of standard treatment, but maintaining good water quality is an important part of helping a fish to recover from a disease.  We recommend to carry out water changes as needed to maintain ideal water chemistry for the fish.

If you need to do a water change, it is best to time your water change to just a few hours before you dose your medication.  This ensures that the concentration of medication in the water stays as steady as possible and minimizes fish stress from suddenly shifting water parameters. With some medications, there are special considerations to take into account when doing a water change, which are covered below:

Special Considerations

Cupramine™

Cupramine™ directly interacts with water conditioners like Prime®. Prepare new water with conditioners 48 hours in advance to prevent interaction.  After this period, dose new water with Cupramine™ so that the incoming water matches the water that is currently in the aquarium. See FAQ: Can I use Cupramine™ together with ______? for more info.

ParaGuard™

ParaGuard™ is dosed daily, making water changes easy. Just time your water change to an hour or so before your daily dose of ParaGuard™.  See FAQ: Can I use ParaGuard™ together with ______?  for more info about using ParaGuard™ immediately after a water change.

MetroPlex™

No special considerations - time your water change to an hour or so before your dose of MetroPlex™ to minimize fish stress from suddenly shifting water parameters.

KanaPlex™

No special considerations - time your water change to an hour or so before your dose of KanaPlex™ to minimize fish stress from suddenly shifting water parameters.

SulfaPlex™

No special considerations - time your water change to an hour or so before your dose of SulfaPlex™ to minimize fish stress from suddenly shifting water parameters.

NeoPlex™

NeoPlex™ is dosed once every 7 days, which may mean that it is necessary to do a water change in between doses.  If this is the case, dose just enough NeoPlex™ for the incoming water an hour or so after your water change to minimize fish stress from suddenly shifting water parameters.

PolyGuard™

No special considerations - time your water change to an hour or so before your dose of PolyGuard™ to minimize fish stress from suddenly shifting water parameters.
