FAQ: Can I use Seachem PhosBond™ together with ________?

Another Company's product

There are a lot of aquarium products on the market, and while most of them will work perfectly fine together in the aquarium, some will not.  We can't 100% guarantee any product that's not our own, but here's a few quick rules:

  1. Avoid using products that overlap in function.  Either one works and so it's the one you should be using, both work and so it's a waste to use them both, or neither work and you should be looking for a third, better product. In the case of phosphate absorbing media like PhosBond™, overuse of this type of media can dramatically lower the phosphate level very suddenly, causing delicate reef organisms to become stressed.
  2. Research the products you use carefully.  PhosBond™ can be used alongside most supplements and types of filtration media, but is capable of removing medication from the water.  PhosBond™ should not be used alongside medications for this reason.  In addition, some freshwater supplements are designed to increase the phosphate level to feed plants or regulate the pH.  PhosBond™ should not be used with these kinds of regulators or supplements.
  3. When in doubt, pull the filter media.  PhosBond™ can be stored more-or-less indefinitely between uses.  If you are unsure if PhosBond™ and the other product will interact, it is perfectly fine to remove the PhosBond™ and store it for later.
  4. Filter medias generally do not interact.  It is rare to find filter medias that direct interact with each other. Know what your filter medias are intended to do, and choose filter medias that accomplish your goals in the aquarium.

Seachem® Products

It is safe to use PhosBond™ alongside most Seachem® products except for medications, which should never be used with any type of chemical filter media (carbon, phosphate absorbers, etc), and phosphate supplements and buffers.

PHOSBOND™ COMPATIBILITY CHARTS

Green: There is no interaction between this product and PhosBond™

Blue: While PhosBond™ may be able to absorb components of this product under laboratory conditions, there is typically no impact on the product or the PhosBond under aquarium conditions.  It is considered perfectly fine to use these products together.

Red: PhosBond™ will directly absorb components of this product, and they should not be used together.

Black: There are no circumstances under which it would be recommended to use these products together in the same tank, so even though they do not interact, it is not recommended to use them together.

Plant Products

Note:  It is typically not recommended to use phosphate absorbers in planted tanks, as phosphate is an essential nutrient for plants.  If your planted aquarium is experiencing a significant buildup of phosphate, it is recommended to investigate your system for a carbon (CO2), nitrogen, or potassium deficiency.
