FAQ: Does Seachem PhosBond™ exhaust, expire, or need to be replaced?

Unopened and sealed PhosBond™ does not expire over time - even very old bottles of PhosBond™ are still okay to use in the aquarium.

Once PhosBond™ has been added to the aquarium, it will start to absorb phosphate and silicate from the water.  Once it has reached its full capacity, these contaminants will start to build up again and PhosBond™ will need to be replaced.  PhosBond™ does not "release" contaminants back into the water once it has absorbed them,  but it does not have an infinite capacity for phosphate and silicate - once it has reached full capacity, phosphate and silicate will be free to build up in the system again.

PhosBond™ cannot be regenerated once it has been used in aquarium filtration.  There are rumors in the fishkeeping hobby that this type of media can be regenerated by baking in an oven. This is a holdover from when a similar type of media is used in industrial air filtration to absorb moisture - it does not work in aquarium filtration.
