Unopened and sealed MatrixCarbon™ does not expire over time - even very old bottles of MatrixCarbon™ are still okay to use in the aquarium.
Once MatrixCarbon™ has been added to the aquarium, it will start to absorb contaminants from the water. Once it has reached its full capacity, these contaminants will start to build up again and MatrixCarbon™ will need to be replaced.
Activated filter carbon like MatrixCarbon™ cannot be regenerated once it has been used in aquarium filtration. There are rumors in the fishkeeping hobby that this type of media can be regenerated by baking in an oven or soaking in a brine solution. Neither of these methods are in any way effective, and are holdovers from industrial and air filtration applications of carbon.
