FAQ: Can I use different materials or alter the Seachem Purigen® regeneration instructions in some way?

NO.

Seachem® has tested and developed the Purigen® regeneration instructions to be safe and effective when the are followed exactly as published, with no alterations, additions, or subtractions. We cannot speak for the safety or effectiveness of the regeneration instructions if they are altered in any way. Any alterations to our published regeneration instructions are undertaken at the fish keeper's own risk.

Here are some frequently-asked questions regarding substitutions or alterations:

FAQ: Can I use thick bleach, splash-less bleach, scented bleach, bleach with detergents, or bleach that is in any way different from 8.25% hypochlorite household bleach?

NO.  Prime® can remove hypochlorite bleach.  We cannot guarantee that it will be able to remove detergents, dyes, surfactants, acids, buffers, or any other potential component of a "mixed" bleach.  If you use these in the regeneration process, they may still be in the Purigen® when the Purigen® is added back into your fish tank.

FAQ: Can I use hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, or some other kind of "bleach alternative" instead of hypochlorite bleach?

NO.  We can only be certain that hypochlorite bleach will be both effective at regenerating the Purigen® and removable by Prime®.  Any other bleach alternative has the potential to be ineffective or dangerous in the regeneration process.

FAQ: Can I use bleach that has a different concentration than 8.25% hypochlorite household bleach?

NO.  This is theoretically possible if the bleach is otherwise suitable for the regeneration process, and varies only in concentration (for example: 6% hypochlorite household bleach), but we have had enough customers report mis-calculating the dose of the bleach with the new concentration that we do not recommend it.

FAQ: Can I use Safe® instead of Prime® in the regeneration instructions?

Yes, but if you do this, you should use about 16 grams of Safe® per cup of water.

FAQ: Can I use another company's water conditioner instead of Prime® or Safe®?

NO.  We can only speak for the safety and effectiveness of our own products.  We have no way of knowing if another company's products will be able to remove the bleach used in Purigen® regeneration instructions.

FAQ: Can I skip the "buffer" step?

You can if your tank has a high alkalinity.  We do not recommend to skip this step in acidic or poorly-buffered tanks.

FAQ: Can I use a different kind of buffer in the "buffer" step?

You can with every Seachem® buffer but "Acid Buffer™" which is not a buffer at all, but an acid.  We do not recommend substituting any buffer that is not made by Seachem®.

FAQ: Can I leave the Purigen® in a step of the regeneration process for longer than is stated in the instructions?

Yes with the Prime® and buffer steps, not with the bleach step.  Leaving Purigen® in the bleach solution for longer than is stated can reduce the life of the Purigen®.

FAQ: Can I leave the Purigen® in a step of the regeneration process for shorter than is stated in the instructions?

NO.

FAQ: Can I reuse regeneration solution for multiple packets of Purigen®?

NO. We can only speak for the safety and effectiveness of freshly-made regeneration solution.
