FAQ: Can I use Seachem NeoPlex™ as a pesticide?

We don't recommend it, and it would likely be fairly ineffective. We did not develop or intend NeoPlex™ as a pesticide for killing off aquarium pests like substrate worms, and as this is an antibacterial medication rather than an anti parasitic medication, it is unlikely to eliminate significant amounts of these pests.  While it (and most other medications) will likely be quite stressful to this type of pest, we cannot speak for its effectiveness in this application.

Seachem® actually does not recommend the use of any pesticide in the aquarium.  While aquarium pests like substrate worms are frustrating and unsightly, they are typically not harmful to the aquarium. They grow in response to an overabundance of organic waste in the substrate, and can be reduced or eliminated by reducing the amount of organic waste available to them.  It's also worth remembering that killing off a large population of substrate worms all at once will likely result in a massive ammonia spike and tank crash.  Overall, it tends to be better for the aquarium to "starve the problem out" than to kill the worms off with a pesticide.
