Another Company's product
There are a lot of aquarium products on the market, and while most of them will work perfectly fine together in the aquarium, some will not. We can't 100% guarantee any product that's not our own, but here's a few quick rules:
- Avoid using products that overlap in function. Either one works and so it's the one you should be using, both work and so it's a waste to use them both, or neither work and you should be looking for a third, better product. In the case of Discus Buffer®, using multiple buffers and regulators when only one is needed could result in a pH that is different from the one you want.
- Avoid using products that directly contradict each other. Discus Buffer® is a phosphate based buffer, so filter medias that remove phosphate should not be used with it.
- Research the products you use carefully. Typically, if a product or medication is volatile enough to react with a buffer or regulator, the company will mention it on the label or website, or you can call in to check.
- When in doubt, wait a day. While there should not be any interaction between Discus Buffer® and another product, leaving 24 hours in between the doses will avoid possible fish stress from rapidly changing water parameters.
Seachem® Products
It's safe to use Discus Buffer® alongside any of the other Seachem® products that are recommended for freshwater systems. That said, combining high levels of minerals with phosphate-based buffers like Discus Buffer® can result in noticeable precipitation. This precipitation is not harmful to fish, but can be unsightly until cleared away using fine filter media (see Clarity® for more info about clearing precipitation)
Among Seachem® products, there are several mineral supplements that are recommended for freshwater community aquariums, but may cause noticeable precipitation if used in high quantities in an aquarium buffered with Discus Buffer®.
Here's some Seachem® products that are Freshwater Mineral Supplements
Replenish™ | American Cichlid Salt™ | Equilibrium™ |
Brackish Salt™ | Cichlid Lake Salt™ |
As previously mentioned, it is fine to use these products together, but high levels of either can result in nontoxic precipitation. We recommend to dose in moderation to avoid this effect.
