Purigen® has a notably higher capacity for organic waste, which makes it our preferred media in most situations. However, there are several reasons why a hobbyist might want less aggressive removal of organic waste! If you want higher levels of nitrate or phosphate (for example: you are relying on the nitrogen cycle of the aquarium to provide nitrate to the plants) then it would be better to use less aggressive filter medias to ensure nitrate has the opportunity to build up. HyperSorb™ is also more economical than Purigen®, and is excellent if you are working with a tight budget.
FAQ: Which is better: Seachem HyperSorb™ or Purigen®?
